Measuring without a tape
Pace it. Most adults walk close to three feet a stride; count strides along one edge, multiply, and you will be within a few percent — which is well inside the accuracy any fertiliser rate needs. Measure the grass only: subtract the driveway, the beds and the house footprint by simply not including them.
A circle is entered by its width across the middle, because that is what you can actually pace. For an odd curved edge, a triangle or two along it gets you closer than pretending it is square.
